    Ashley Landis/Associated Press

The latest edition of MLB The Show dropped last week for PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch, and that means it's time for a deep dive into each team's roster.

Who's rated too high? Who's rated too low? Who's missing entirely?

Those were among the questions we set out to answer while perusing the roster for all 30 teams in the latest video game offering from San Diego Studio.

Here's a quick rundown of what you'll find on each team page:

    • Top 10 Players: The 10 highest-rated players on the team's MLB roster, based on the current live rosters for standard game play. These are not the Diamond Dynasty rankings, which we'll dive into in another article.
    • Franchise Mode Target: An up-and-coming player with good in-game potential who is worth targeting late in fantasy drafts in franchise mode. The focus here was on players with an overall rating of 75 or lower.
    • Overrated: The player I felt had an overall rating that was too high relative to his real-life abilities.
    • Underrated: The player I felt had an overall rating that was too low relative to his real-life abilities.
    • Instant Reaction: The first thought that popped into my head while looking through each team's roster for the first time.

    Enjoy!

My gamer tag is JReuter10988 on PlayStation network. Just sayin'...

Franchise Mode Target: SS Jordan Lawlar (71 overall, "A" potential)

Overrated: RP Oliver Perez (80 overall)

Underrated: RF Pavin Smith (66 overall)

Instant Reaction: This feels about right across the board. Perhaps a bit generous to an aging Madison Bumgarner, but he posted a respectable 4.67 ERA in 146.1 innings last year to at least partially rebound from a dreadful 2020 season.

Franchise Mode Target: CF Michael Harris II (59 overall, "A" potential)

Overrated: C Manny Pina (83 overall)

Underrated: 3B Austin Riley (83 overall)

Instant Reaction: Kirby Yates was arguably baseball's best closer as recently as 2019. However, he hasn't pitched since Aug. 14, 2020, and he's not expected to be ready to go until after the All-Star break. Does he really still deserve an 86 overall?

Overrated: 2B Rougned Odor (77 overall)

Underrated: RF Anthony Santander (72 overall)

Instant Reaction: Grayson Rodriguez at a 69 overall feels really low, even with the accompanying "A" potential. The 22-year-old is the best pitching prospect in baseball, and we're going to see him in the majors at some point in 2022.

Franchise Mode Target: SS Marcelo Mayer (71 overall, "A" potential)

Overrated: SP James Paxton (83 overall)

Underrated: CF Enrique Hernandez (78 overall)

Instant Reaction: Trevor Story has a more well-rounded skill set than Rafael Devers and Xander Bogaerts, who don't provide much in the way of base-running value and are below-average defenders at their positions, so it makes sense that he'd have a higher overall rating. It's still weird seeing him as the best player on the Red Sox roster, though.

Instant Reaction: Is Nico ho*rner really that much better than Nick Madrigal? Both guys have yet to reach 120 games in the big leagues, so the 2022 season will be a big one in determining their future roles on the team.

Franchise Mode Target: LF Andrew Vaughn (73 overall, "A" potential)

Overrated: 2B Leury Garcia (80 overall)

Instant Reaction: Slapping an 81 overall on Michael Kopech when he has never pitched more than 69.1 innings in a season and is making the move from swingman to full-time member of the rotation is bold, but there's no question he has the stuff to be an elite starter.

Instant Reaction: A round of applause for giving Tyler Mahle the respect he deserves. The 27-year-old went 13-6 with a 3.75 ERA and 210 strikeouts in 180 innings last year and has quietly developed into one of the game's best young pitchers.

Instant Reaction: Either Aaron Civale (124.1 IP, 3.84 ERA) is overrated or Cal Quantrill (149.2 IP, 2.89 ERA) is underrated based on their 2021 performances, though they are both quality young arms in a rotation that is the strength of the Cleveland roster.

Franchise Mode Target: RF Zac Veen (66 overall, "A" potential)

Overrated: 2B Garrett Hampson (79 overall)

Instant Reaction: It will be interesting to see how things unfold with the middle infield trio of Garrett Hampson (81 overall), Brendan Rodgers (78 overall) and Jose Iglesias (74 overall) as far as playing time is concerned. Of the three, Hampson might be the one who fits best in a utility role.

Instant Reaction: Outfielder Kyle Tucker should be the Astros' best player. He hits for power (30 home runs) and average (.294 BA), can steal a base (14 SB in 16 attempts), and plays terrific defense in right field (11 DRS). That full tool box should easily make him a 90-overall player.

Instant Reaction: Respect where it's due, but Clayton Kershaw is the third-best pitcher on the Dodgers these days. Rising aces Walker Buehler and Julio Urias both outperformed him in 2021, and the tables are unlikely to turn back as Kershaw enters his age-34 season.

Franchise Mode Target: C Henry Davis (73 overall, "A" potential)

Overrated: C Roberto Perez (84 overall)

Underrated: 1B Yoshi Tsutsugo (64 overall)

Instant Reaction: Veteran catcher Roberto Perez is the single most overrated player in the entire game. The 33-year-old hit .149 with a 54 OPS+ and minus-0.1 WAR last year, yet he somehow has the same rating as budding star Bryan Reynolds? Wild.

Franchise Mode Target: SP MacKenzie Gore (71 overall, "A" potential)

Overrated: 1B Luke Voit (80 overall)

Underrated: SS CJ Abrams (69 overall)

Instant Reaction: If the Padres can get and stay healthy, their starting rotation is going to be one of the best in baseball, and that's clear here with five guys checking in with an 83 overall rating or higher. Chris Paddack (78 overall) and Dinelson Lamet (77 overall) are also around as depth options.

Instant Reaction: There were plenty of choices for most underrated player on the Giants roster, with Alex Cobb (75 overall), Camilo Doval (73 overall), Tommy La Stella (72 overall), Steven Duggar (70 overall) and Joc Pederson (70 overall) also seemingly a few ticks below where they should be ranked.

Overrated: 2B Dylan Moore (81 overall)

Underrated: SS J.P. Crawford (76 overall)

Instant Reaction: Does Dylan Moore work at Sony? The 29-year-old utility infielder hit .181 with a 71 OPS+ and 0.9 WAR last season, yet he's tied for the third-highest-rated player on the Seattle roster. Meanwhile, starting shortstop J.P. Crawford is a 67 overall following a 3.8-WAR season.

Instant Reaction: Right fielder Dylan Carlson just missed cracking the top 10 with a 78 overall and "A" potential. I have a hunch the 23-year-old is going to be someone who consistently develops into a superstar and MVP candidate in franchise mode.

Franchise Mode Target: SP Shane Baz (74 overall, "A" potential)

Overrated: SP Corey Kluber (83 overall)

    Underrated: 1B Ji-Man Choi (68 overall)

Instant Reaction: A 59 contact rating for Wander Franco against right-handed pitching seems a bit harsh, and it's probably the reason he doesn't have a higher overall rating. Meanwhile, center fielder Kevin Kiermaier is propped up by his 99 fielding and 99 reaction ratings.

Franchise Mode Target: SP Jack Leiter (71 overall, "A" potential)

Overrated: SP Kohei Arihara (75 overall)

Underrated: 1B Nathaniel Lowe (74 overall overall)

Instant Reaction: This is a mess. How is Marcus Semien (97 overall) rated that much higher than Corey Seager (80 overall)? Kohei Arihara had a 6.64 ERA in 10 starts last year before he was removed from the 40-man roster, yet he's the team's third-best starter? Cleanup hitter Nathaniel Lowe is worse than utility man Charlie Culberson? This whole roster needs a total redo.

Franchise Mode Target: C Gabriel Moreno (72 overall, "A" potential)

    Overrated:SP Kevin Gausman (89 overall)

    Underrated:RP Jordan Romero (78 overall)

Instant Reaction: The Blue Jays are stacked, and these rankings certainly back that up. With four starting pitchers ranked 84 overall or higher, this might be the best starting rotation the team has had since the early 1990s, when they won back-to-back World Series titles.

Overrated: SP Stephen Strasburg (87 overall)

Instant Reaction: I was tempted to call Juan Soto the most underrated player on the Nationals roster with a 91 overall rating. Other 91 overall players include Max Muncy, Ozzie Albies and Byron Buxton, and it feels like he should be a notch above those guys.
