Geico vs. Progressive Coverage

Both Geico and Progressive offer full coverage insurance options. This means that each insurer provides the six standard types of car insurance coverage:

Geico vs. Progressive: Cost & Coverage Comparison (2024) (2)
  • Liability: Liability car insurance is broken into bodily injury liability and property damage liability coverage. This type of policy pays for damages to other parties’ vehicles and persons after an accident for which you are at fault. Liability insurance is required in most states.
  • Collision: Collision insurance covers repair costs for your own vehicle after an accident or if your vehicle flips. Collisions with animals are not covered by this coverage.
  • Comprehensive: Comprehensive insurance pays for repair costs if your vehicle is damaged by animals, natural disasters or fire. This type of coverage also pays to replace your vehicle if it is stolen or vandalized.
  • Medical payments (MedPay): This coverage pays for the medical expenses of you and your passengers after an accident.
  • Personal injury protection (PIP): This coverage pays for medical expenses for you and your passengers, as well as pain and suffering damages and compensation for lost wages if you cannot work due to accident-related injuries. It is required in many no-fault states.
  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist (UM/UIM): Uninsured motorist coverage pays for your property and injury expenses if you are involved in a hit-and-run. It also covers accidents with drivers that do not have insurance or do not have high enough policy limits to cover the full cost of your damages. UM is required in some states.

We recommend that most drivers carry full coverage, but many drivers carry only the minimum liability limits in their state. Our team surveyed 1,000 car insurance customers in 2022 and found that about 25% of drivers carry minimum coverage and about 67% carry full coverage. Of those who have full coverage policies, 45% have high limits and 55% have low limits.

Additional Coverage Options

Along with standard auto insurance policies, both Geico and Progressive offer additional coverage options like roadside assistance and rideshare insurance.
