How many insurance companies are pulling out of Florida?
At least a dozen insurance companies have stopped issuing new policies in Florida since January 2022 and three companies have announced their intentions to withdraw from the state in the past year, according to the Institute.
And these aren't “mom and pop” insurance companies, either—Farmers Insurance, Nationwide, and Progressive have all announced major changes to their presence in the Florida market.
The litigation costs proved to be too much for local, residential-only insurers and prompted seven of them to become insolvent. For national insurers, the costs have translated to higher premiums or fewer policy offerings. Florida's hurricane risk has also played a role, as extreme weather has in many other states.
“Florida property remains an important part of our Progressive Home business, and we have no plans to leave the state,” they noted further.
Mounting insurance costs and natural disasters are prompting some people to relocate. According to Redfin, in Florida, 11.9% of survey respondents who plan to move in the next year cited rising insurance costs as a reason — roughly twice the national share of 6.2%.

The Auto Club Insurance Company (AAA) of Florida has announced that it will not renew a “very small percentage” of auto and home insurance package policies in Florida. But, the insurer stressed, it is not leaving the state — it's just trying to manage its risk. In fact, it plans on growing its business in the state.
Florida, according to several experts, is becoming "uninsurable." And other states, starting from California, might follow suit in the near future.
USAA will continue to provide auto insurance, life insurance, banking, and investment products to its members in Florida, as long as the state permits it to do so.
What homeowners insurance companies have left Florida?
Earlier in July, Farmers Insurance announced that it is no longer offering new business or renewing any of its auto, home and umbrella policies in Florida. In mid-2022, Bankers Insurance Company reported its exit from Florida, only to be followed by AIG and Lexington Insurance, a subsidiary of AIG.
