Where do the banks keep their money?
Federal law sets requirements for the percentage of deposits a bank must keep on reserve, either at the local Federal Reserve Bank or in its own vault. Any money a bank has on hand after it meets its reserve requirement is its excess reserves.
A bank vault is a secure space where money, valuables, records, and documents are stored.
Banks may keep reserves in two ways. They can keep cash in their vault, or they can deposit their reserves into an account at their local Federal Reserve Bank.
It doesn't remain locked away in the bank vault – instead, the money you deposit into a savings account is used by the bank to make loans to other people and businesses in your community so that they have the money to pay for big expenses like houses and cars, or even to operate a business.
Millionaires also have zero-balance accounts with private banks. They leave their money in cash and cash equivalents and they write checks on their zero-balance account. At the end of the business day, the private bank, as custodian of their various accounts, sells off enough liquid assets to settle up for that day.
A safe deposit box is a secure container, usually made of metal, that's used to store valuables at a bank or credit union. These boxes are often kept in vaults and can be rented by bank customers for a fee. Modern safe deposit boxes have been around since the mid-1800s.
Vaults are designed with one- to several-feet-thick walls, providing fortification against would-be robberies, as well as natural disasters. They can prevent damage to valuables due to flooding, extreme wind, heat, and even seismic activity.
Where to safely keep cash at home. Just like any other piece of paper, cash can get lost, wet or burned. Consider buying a fireproof and waterproof safe for your home. It's also useful for storing other valuables in your home such as jewelry and important personal documents.
FDIC insurance covers checking and savings accounts, money market accounts, certificates of deposit (CDs), negotiable order of withdrawal (NOW) accounts and cashier's checks or money orders issued by the bank. These accounts are covered for up to $250,000 per account holder, per ownership category.
Only a small portion of your deposits at a bank are actually held as cash at the bank. The rest of your money (the majority of the bank's assets) is invested by the bank into vehicles such as consumer or business loans, government bonds and credit cards. Borrowers have to pay the bank back with interest.
Where do billionaires keep their money?
Common types of securities include bonds, stocks and funds (mutual and exchange-traded). Funds and stocks are the bread-and-butter of investment portfolios. Billionaires use these investments to ensure their money grows steadily.
Among the safest US banks, according to Global Finance's November 2022 rankings, are AgriBank, US Bank, CoBank, AgFirst Bank, and Farm Credit Bank of Texas, primarily for those in the agricultural sector.
Reserve requirements by country
Term deposits have a 33% RRR and savings accounts a 20% ratio. Banks shall maintain minimum required reserves to the amount of 10% of the deposit base (effective from 1 December 2008) with two exceptions (effective from 1 January 2009): 1.
You can look to see the amount of total deposits that a bank has and look to see whether they have been increasing over time. A strong track record of stable growth is an indicator of consumer confidence and the bank's ability to strengthen its balance sheet.
Banks make money by imposing service charges on their customers. These fees vary based on the products, ranging from account fees (monthly maintenance charges, minimum balance fees, overdraft fees, and non-sufficient funds [NSF] charges), safe deposit box fees, and late fees.
What makes up Musk's net worth. Musk lacks significant tranches of cash; his money is largely tied up in ownership stakes of his companies. To buy Twitter in 2022, he leveraged his large share in Tesla and solicited investors, rather than relying on liquid sums.
“J.P. Morgan Private Bank is the more elite program serving ultra-high-net-worth individuals,” Naghibi said. “It offers comprehensive services in savings, checking and retirement account management.

The most famous vault in the world, Fort Knox in many minds *is* the most secure vault in the world because of the legends and mystical aura surrounding it.
DBS, Asia's Safest Bank offers a wide array of Safe Deposit Locker facilities across its extensive branch network for the safety of your valuables and documents.
Do banks actually have gold bars?
Banks. Some banks in the U.S. sell gold bars and coins (as well as silver coins). This can be a good option for investors who prefer the public accountability of a federally regulated institution. However, your options may be limited compared to what you'll find at an online retailer.
It is kind of possible - with a bit of luck. These guys used industrial drills to access a vault. It did set of an alarm, but for various reasons it was ignored. Most big vaults will have some sensors - vibration heat/movement or similar that are very likely to be triggered.
Contrary to popular belief, safety deposit boxes are not fireproof. This means that they are not immune to heat and fire. During a fire, if the temperature inside the bank vault rises to 451 degrees Fahrenheit, paper documents will ignite. At 1,763 degrees Fahrenheit, jewelry and other metal items will melt.
The air circuit passes through the Wall of the vault, but because of local conditions, it is customary to have the intake of the air supply of the ventilator system open into the bank room, partly because the dis tance from the Wall of the vault to the out side of the building is quite long, and partly 1930.
“Some common places for hiding valuables are behind wallpaper, inside couch and chair cushions, or behind loose bricks around fireplaces. People also like to hide valuables under steps, siding, and shingles.”
