What is the largest bank to fail?
Silicon Valley Bank Failure
The collapse of Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) in San Francisco on March 10, 2023, stands out due to its rapid fallout and the significant impact on the tech and startup industry. At the time, it was the second-largest bank failure in U.S. history since the 2008 financial crisis.
Of the 568 bank failures from 2000 to 2023, 465—or 82%—occurred from 2008 to 2012. Bank failures hit a peak in 2010 at 157 in one year—more than double the number of bank failures we've seen in the last 10 years combined.
Generally, credit unions are viewed as safer than banks, although deposits at both types of financial institutions are usually insured at the same dollar amounts. The FDIC insures deposits at most banks, and the NCUA insures deposits at most credit unions.
Washington Mutual Bank remains the largest bank failure and by a fairly wide margin. The institution faltered during the 2008 financial crisis as the housing market and the secondary market for mortgage-backed securities crashed.
FDIC Insurance
Most deposits in banks are insured dollar-for-dollar by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.
JPMorgan Chase, the financial institution that owns Chase Bank, topped our experts' list because it's designated as the world's most systemically important bank on the 2023 G-SIB list. This designation means it has the highest loss absorbency requirements of any bank, providing more protection against financial crisis.
