Why can't I get approved to open a bank account?
Unpaid fees or negative account balances, whether from an active or closed account. Suspected fraud or identity theft. Applying for too many bank accounts over a short period of time.
Why can't I open a bank account? A bank can deny your request to open an account because of past accounts that were closed due to negative balances, a history of overdrafts or problems verifying your identity. If you're unable to open a bank account, here are some tips on what to do next.
Common reasons consumers are turned down for a bank account include a history of overdrafts, unpaid bank fees or suspected fraud. Applications can also be denied due to mistakes on one's checking account report. If you've been denied a bank account, ask the bank why this happened.
If you believe the bank's decision to refuse to open a bank account for you was based on unlawful grounds, you could make a claim for discrimination in the courts; and/or complain to the Financial Ombudsman Service.
A bank or credit union may refuse to open a checking account for someone who cannot provide the identification that it requests. Tip: If you can't get a checking account because you are listed as having a prior problem with handling a checking account, try another bank or credit union.
Second-chance checking accounts allow those who have been denied a traditional account to open a specialized one to help them build a strong financial foundation. Financial institutions offering second-change checking accounts include Capital One, Chime, GO2bank, GTE Financial, Fifth Third, Varo and Wells Fargo.

How do I know if I am on ChexSystems?
How can I know if I've been reported to ChexSystems? Some may be unaware they've been reported to ChexSystems until they try opening a new bank account. The good news is that you can find out by reviewing your consumer disclosure report. Visit ChexSystems.com to request a copy of your report.

What does it mean when a bank can't verify my identity? If all your document checks out, there are two major reasons why you might experience an unsuccessful verification – it may be because you've recently changed your residential address or you answered one or more security questions incorrectly.
Many credit unions will open an account for you if you can reasonably explain why you haven't paid a ChexSystems debt, and some credit unions will not pull a report on you even if you do have poor history. Call and ask to speak to the branch manager or other bank official.
Number of of bounced checks and overdrafts. Frequency of debit or credit card replacements. History of account openings. Negative balances towards your bank accounts that have yet to be paid.

But for people with bad credit, opening a bank account can be a slightly more nerve-wracking experience. So can a bad credit score prevent a person from opening a bank account? Well, not exactly. It won't prevent them from opening a bank account in the same manner it prevents them from getting a loan or a credit card.

Fortunately, not all banks rely on ChexSystems to screen prospective account holders, though it can be tricky to tell which ones do. Some make it more obvious by marketing their financial products as opportunity checking or second-chance checking accounts, but it's harder to tell with others.
Even if you have a negative ChexSystems report, you may be allowed to open a savings account, which isn't as big of a risk to banks as checking accounts.
