How to survive without a bank account?
Consider a reloadable prepaid card if you don't have a checking account. Prepaid cards can be useful for managing your money if you have a variable income, and many do not charge overdraft fees. They also may offer fraud protection and transaction monitoring to protect your money from suspicious activity.
Although it's possible to function in society today with no bank account, it's not recommended. That's because, without a bank account, the cash and funds you keep are less safe and it's more difficult to use, transfer, and manage your money.
Consumers who don't have bank accounts sometimes use prepaid cards to deposit checks and access their cash. Prepaid cards are similar to checking account debit cards. Your spending is limited by how much money you have loaded onto the card.
“I would argue that it is too expensive to be unbanked.” If you don't have a bank account, McClary says you're most likely to pay high fees for a prepaid card or a check cashing service. “Not only will you pay more, but your money will not be as safe due to a lack of FDIC protection,” he says.
You need a bank account to: Receive your wages, state benefits or pension payments. Pay your bills by direct debit – many companies charge more if you pay another way.
An estimated 4.5 percent of U.S. households (approximately 5.9 million) were “unbanked” in 2021, meaning that no one in the household had a checking or savings account at a bank or credit union.
One of the options you can use to pay unbanked employees is to use Pay Cards. Pay cards work like debit cards. Like direct deposit, payroll cards are a form of electronic payment. Each payday, the employee's net wages are deposited directly into the pay card.
Why are people unbanked? According to the FDIC Survey of Unbanked and Underbanked Households, people are unbanked because they can't meet minimum balance requirements, lack of trust in banks, have privacy concerns or don't want to pay high banking fees.
Its easy to assume that with the world's digital financial services advancements that everyone today has a bank account. But this is far from the truth. According to the World Bank's latest report nearly 1.7 billion people are unbanked globally. That's close to to one forth of the global population.
Being unbanked in America
The FDIC calls people without a bank account “the unbanked.” People with a bank account but who primarily rely on alternative services such as check cashing outlets are called “the underbanked.” The latest FDIC data shows almost six million unbanked and 19 million underbanked U.S. households.
Is it smart to not have a bank account?
Fees are often high to cash checks or transfer money without a bank account." Expensive check cashing is just the start -- borrowing without a bank account is where the real pain begins. "Services like payday loans may provide access to needed funds in the short run but at the cost of higher interest fees," White said.
Being unbanked means things like cashing checks and paying bills are costly and time-consuming. Those who are unbanked often must rely on check cashing services to cash paychecks because they don't have direct deposit. They also have to pay bills using money orders, which adds time and expense to the process.

The Short Answer: Yes. Share: The IRS probably already knows about many of your financial accounts, and the IRS can get information on how much is there. But, in reality, the IRS rarely digs deeper into your bank and financial accounts unless you're being audited or the IRS is collecting back taxes from you.

The unbanked are adults who do not have their own bank accounts. Along with the underbanked, they may rely on alternative financial services for their financial needs, where these are available.
Key statistics
The Federal Reserve found that in the U.S., 13% of adults are underbanked as of 2021, meaning they have a bank account but regularly use alternative financial services, and 5% are unbanked meaning they have no bank account at all. The unbanked population is made up of around 13 million people in the U.S.
As of May 2023, more than 1 in 5 Americans have no emergency savings. Nearly one in three (30 percent) people in 2023 had some emergency savings, but not enough to cover three months of expenses. This is up from 27 percent of people in 2022.
The median savings account balance for all families in the U.S. was $8,000 in 2022. Generally, higher-income earners and older individuals save more than younger ones.
How many Americans don't have $1000 in their bank account?
A stunning new Bankrate survey of 1,030 individuals finds that more than half of American adults (56%) lack sufficient savings to shoulder an unexpected $1,000 expense.
Here's Who's Pulling Their Money. Total deposits at commercial banks fell by just over $1 trillion from April 2022 to May 2023. People 40 years old and younger are more likely to pull their money, with 38% of them reporting that they moved deposits compared to 23% of those over 40.
“Millionaires' checking accounts are all over the place,” Thompson said. “Some clients will only keep enough to pay for immediate expenses (e.g., $10,000) and others will have $150,000 in checking on any given day.”
“We would recommend between $100 to $300 of cash in your wallet, but also having a reserve of $1,000 or so in a safe at home,” Anderson says. Depending on your spending habits, a couple hundred dollars may be more than enough for your daily expenses or not enough.
How much is too much savings? Keeping too much of your money in savings could mean missing out on the chance to earn higher returns elsewhere. It's also important to keep FDIC limits in mind. Anything over $250,000 in savings may not be protected in the rare event that your bank fails.
